Do I need a sediment filter for my well?

You need one if grit, sand, or rust particles are reaching your fixtures: clogged aerators, a gritty water heater, or a layer that settles in a glass. A sediment filter protects the plumbing and any treatment equipment downstream. It does not fix why sediment is entering the well, and it does nothing for cloudiness that is biological.

Fill a clear glass and watch for two minutes. A layer that settles is sediment and a filter helps. Cloudiness that clears from the bottom up is air. A haze that never settles, especially with slime elsewhere in the house, is growth in the system, and that is a cleaning problem.

If sediment started suddenly, look at the well before the filter: a pump set too low, a failing screen, or a silting well are contractor conversations, and a filter alone just fills up faster.
