Low Water Pressure From a Well: Causes and Fixes

Weak pressure on a well system has two families of cause: mechanical parts wearing out, and the system slowly choking on what is growing inside it. Here is how to tell which one you have before you spend money on the wrong fix.

First, rule out the machinery

Check three things in order. The pressure gauge by the tank: most systems run a 40 to 60 psi cycle, and a needle stuck low or bouncing wildly points at the switch or the tank. The pressure tank itself: a tank that thuds instead of ringing hollow near the top is waterlogged and short-cycles the pump. The pump's behavior: a pump that runs constantly without reaching cutoff pressure is either leaking somewhere between the well and the house or wearing out. Those three fixes belong to a plumber or well contractor, and no cleaning chemistry changes them.

Then look at what is growing in the system

If the machinery checks out and the pressure has been fading for months rather than days, the system is probably narrowing from the inside. Iron bacteria build layered slime on the well screen, the pump intake, and the pipe walls, and scale and sediment pack into what the slime catches. The cleaning that reopens a choked system

The fix is a shock treatment of the whole water path, following how to shock a well. Why is my well water pressure suddenly low?

Sudden drops usually mean a mechanical event: a failing pressure switch, a waterlogged pressure tank, a leak between the well and the house, or a pump on its way out. Gradual fading over months points instead at clogging, and the most common clogger in iron country is the biofilm iron bacteria build inside screens, pipes, and the pump intake.

Can a clogged well cause low water pressure?

How do I check my pressure tank?

Will shocking my well improve water pressure?
