Well Water Smells Like Sulfur in the Morning: Why, and the Fix

A rotten egg smell that greets you at the first tap of the day and fades by breakfast is a stagnation smell: hydrogen sulfide building up overnight in still water. The source is your water heater, your pipes, or your well, and one two-minute test tells you which.

Why mornings, and only mornings?

Sulfur-reducing bacteria work slowly. Give them a night of still, warm, oxygen-poor water and they produce enough hydrogen sulfide gas to notice; keep the water moving all day and the gas never accumulates. That is the whole trick of a morning-only smell, and it is good news: it usually means the source is inside your system, where you can reach it, rather than in the aquifer itself. The two-faucet test

First thing tomorrow, before anyone runs water, fill one glass from a cold tap and one from the hot side, and smell each at arm's length. Hot-only smell points at the water heater: its warm tank is a comfortable home for sulfur bacteria, and the magnesium anode rod many heaters carry feeds the reaction. Flushing and disinfecting the tank, and swapping the anode for an aluminum-zinc one, is a plumber's morning of work. Smell on the cold side, with or without the hot, points at the well, the pressure tank, and the plumbing, and that is a cleaning problem.

One more clue: if only the least-used bathroom smells, run that tap for a full minute. A smell that clears and stays away until the room sits unused again is biofilm in that branch line making gas where water stagnates longest.

Fixing the cold side for good

A cold-side morning smell means colonies in the well or the plumbing are making gas overnight, and the fix is a shock treatment that actually reaches all of it: the standing water column, the casing walls, the pressure tank, and every run of pipe, following the full shock procedure. Why does my well water smell like rotten eggs only in the morning?

Because the smell needs still water to build. Hydrogen sulfide gas accumulates overnight in water sitting in your water heater, your pipes, or your well, and the first draw of the day carries it out. Water that runs all day never sits long enough to build a noticeable dose, which is why the smell fades by breakfast.

Is a morning sulfur smell dangerous?

At the levels that make household water smell, hydrogen sulfide is primarily a nuisance: it offends the nose, corrodes plumbing over time, and can stain fixtures. It is still worth finding the source, and a well showing any new smell deserves a bacteria test, because the same conditions that feed sulfur bacteria can accompany other contamination paths.

Why does only one bathroom smell in the morning?

The farthest or least-used fixture holds its water the longest, so gas builds there first. A guest bathroom that sits unused all week is the classic complaint. Will shocking the well stop the morning smell?
