Iron Filter for Well Water: When You Need One, and What to Do First

Iron filters are sold as if iron were one thing. It is three: dissolved iron, particulate iron, and iron bacteria, and the filter that fixes one is useless or worse on another. Here is how to tell which you have, which filter fits, and why a slimed well needs cleaning before the filter goes in.

Which kind of iron do you have?

Water that comes out clear and turns orange in the glass or the toilet bowl is dissolved iron, oxidizing on contact with air. Water that comes out orange or carries rust particles is particulate iron, already oxidized somewhere in the well or the pipes. Orange slime in the toilet tank, a swampy smell, and pressure that fades over months is iron bacteria, a living colony in the system. Which filter fits which iron?

Modest dissolved iron rides along with a water softener, up to the limit the resin maker publishes. Higher dissolved iron needs an oxidizing filter: manganese greensand and similar media, catalytic carbon, or an air-injection system that oxidizes the iron in a chamber and catches it in a bed. Particulate iron needs a sediment filter, sized fine enough for the particles that are getting through. Iron bacteria need none of these yet, because a filter is just the next surface for the colony to grow on.

Why iron filters fail on a slimed well

Biofilm coats filter media the way it coats a casing, sheds slugs that foul the bed, and consumes the oxidant an oxidizing filter depends on. The result is a filter that channels, clogs, and needs rebedding early, while the water keeps staining. The fix is the order of operations: clean the well, the pressure tank, and the plumbing first, following the iron bacteria guide, then retest for dissolved iron and size a filter for that number. What is the best iron filter for well water?

The one matched to the form of iron you have, which is why the test comes first. Dissolved iron at modest levels can be handled by a softener; higher levels need an oxidizing media or air injection filter; particulate iron needs a sediment filter; and iron bacteria need a well cleaning before any filter will hold up.

Will a water softener remove iron?

A softener exchanges modest amounts of dissolved iron along with hardness, and manufacturers publish the limit for their resin. It does nothing for particulate iron and it fouls badly on iron bacteria, so a softener on a slimed well is a softener with a short life.

How much iron in well water is too much?

The EPA's secondary standard is 0.3 milligrams per liter, the level where staining and taste begin. It is an aesthetic limit rather than a health limit, and plenty of wells run several times higher without harm beyond the laundry.

Do I need an iron filter or a well shock?

Possibly both, and the order matters. Iron bacteria call for the cleaning first; the filter then handles the dissolved iron that is actually in the groundwater. A filter installed on an uncleaned well clogs, sheds slugs of slime, and gets blamed for a problem it never had a chance against.
