Do I need a UV system for my well?
A UV system disinfects water continuously at the point it enters the house, which is the right tool when a well keeps testing positive for bacteria despite a sound wellhead and a proper shock treatment, or when the source is a spring or shallow well that will always see surface influence. It is not a substitute for cleaning the well: UV treats the water passing through it and does nothing for the biofilm upstream.
UV needs clear water to work, so it sits behind a sediment filter, and iron or hardness that fouls the lamp sleeve cuts its effect. A slimed well feeds it exactly the water it handles worst, which is another reason the cleaning comes first.
The sequence that works: seal the entry point, shock the system, retest. If the well passes and stays passed, you do not need UV. If it keeps failing with a sound wellhead, UV is the honest next step and a contractor sizes it.
