Is chlorine dioxide safe for treating well water?

Chlorine dioxide is an EPA-registered drinking water disinfectant that municipal water plants run every day, and the EPA sets an allowed level for it in finished drinking water. In a well treatment you use it the way you would use chlorine: dose, hold, then flush it out through every outlet before anyone drinks from the system, following all directions on the product label. It breaks down to simple salts rather than the chlorinated byproducts bleach leaves behind.

The product our kit ships, Selectrocide, comes in 12-gram and 5-gram pouches that are NSF/ANSI 60 certified for drinking water treatment, generates 99.9% pure chlorine dioxide in a sealed pouch, and is dosed at 20 ppm, the bottom of the manufacturer's published 20 to 50 ppm range.

The safety habits are the same as any treatment: gloves and eye protection when handling the product, stay upwind of the open wellhead, keep the treated water out of the septic system, and flush through every outlet before anyone drinks the water.
