How long does it take to treat a well?

Plan on a weekend of mostly waiting. With our kit, the label's steps are: activate one pouch at a time in the kit's lidded mixing pail of water for at least 2 hours to make a 500 ppm stock, pour the stock into the well, circulate it, run it to every tap, and let it stand overnight, about 12 hours, with the water off. Then flush for a few hours through every outlet. The bacteria retest that proves it worked comes one to two weeks later.

Treating a well with a disinfectant is also called shock chlorination.

The work steps are simple: bypass softeners and filters, make the stock in the kit's lidded mixing pail, pour the amount your plan lists into the well, circulate it with the well pump through a garden hose, run about 6 ounces through every tap, and leave the system off overnight.

Schedule around the outage: fill drinking water ahead, and plan showers elsewhere for the contact day. The treatment sits in the well overnight. You flush it out in the morning.
