How long does it take to shock a well?
Plan on a weekend of mostly waiting: an hour or two of actual work mixing, pouring, and recirculating, then 12 to 24 hours of contact time with the water off, then a few hours of flushing until the residual reads zero. The bacteria retest that proves it worked comes one to two weeks later.
The work steps are simple: bypass softeners and filters, mix the dose, pour it down the casing, recirculate with a garden hose to wash the casing walls, pull the treatment to every tap, and shut the system down for the contact window.
Schedule around the outage: fill drinking water ahead, and plan showers elsewhere for the contact day. The well does the work while you do nothing, which is the whole appeal of doing it yourself.
