Can you shock a well with hydrogen peroxide?

Peroxide's home turf is continuous odor treatment, not a one-time shock: injection systems feed it constantly to oxidize sulfur smells. As a shock it is a poor fit for a drinking water well. The 3% bottle from the pharmacy is far too weak to matter, and the concentrated grades that could work are hazardous to handle and are not labeled for disinfecting a potable well. Use a product labeled for the job.

The labeled options are chlorine, dosed at 100 to 200 ppm per extension guidance, or chlorine dioxide, dosed at 20 ppm per its manufacturer's published shock range. Both carry actual use directions for potable wells, which is exactly what a homemade peroxide dose lacks.

If a persistent sulfur smell is what pushed you toward peroxide, treat the source instead: the bacteria making the gas live in biofilm, and a properly sized shock treatment reaches them where they live.
